Symptom

I set up Wordpress as a multisite installation and would now like to use it to operate other domains as websites.

Solution

With Wordpress in multisite mode, you can operate any number of different Wordpress websites with the same Wordpress login and the same Wordpress software. The Wordpress files only exist once in a single document root directory. Depending on which domain is accessed on the Internet, Wordpress uses the domain name to deliver the content of the website intended for this domain.

For this to work, all domains that are to be managed with the Wordpress multisite installation must use the same document root directory. You can achieve this in several ways:

a) The best and safest option is to set up each additional domain that is to be managed with Wordpress as a domain alias. You can do this with the "Add Alias" button. A domain alias is representative of the domain and automatically points to the same document root directory.

b) You can also add the additional domain as web space with the "Add domain" button. In this case, enter the same path as the document root directory that you use for the main domain of your Wordpress website. This solution is not recommended, because later, if the domain is deleted carelessly, the document root directory and thus the content of the main domain may also be inadvertently deleted.
